5 Emerging Technology Trends for Healthcare for 2021

Participants mainly use assistants to inquire about symptoms (72.9 percent), ask about medical information (45.9 percent), locate urgent care, clinic, or hospital (37.7 percent), and research treatment options (37.7 percent).

Other uses include:

  • Finding a physical therapist or physician
  • Scheduling an appointment
  • Inquiring about insurance coverage
  • Using a tracker or health device

The types of voice-search devices that participants prefer to use include smart earbuds (6.5 percent), car-based assistants (12 percent), smart speakers (17.6 percent), and smartphones (52.6 percent).

4. Virtual Reality

Also an emerging technology in healthcare, virtual reality (VR) is an innovative tool with many applications, from teaching autistic children communication and social skills to engaging patients in activities and games for rehabilitation purposes.

VR solutions can manage hot flashes through cognitive behavioral therapy and relieve pain through meditation training. Some applications use Google Glass and augmented reality for clinical and medical documentation support, including reminder, order, and referral assistance.

Applications also assist healthcare professionals with medical training and education, clinical decision-making, and time and data management. They come in handy in providing physicians with communication tools such as email, text, video conferencing, and voice calling. Physicians also need access to laboratory information systems, picture archiving and communication systems, and electronic medical and health records. Healthcare professionals use clinical software applications such as medical calculators and disease diagnoses tools.

Mobile applications designed for patient use feature a host of handy functionalities, from pill and care reminders and appointment management to selecting a physician and remote medical assistance. When selecting a healthcare provider, patients can check their hospital location, consultation fees, visiting hours, and specialty.

According to research published in PLoS One, multiple factors play a role in choosing a physician, including waiting times, treatment continuity, communication skills, availability, residency/medical school, gender, and age. Many apps come with a smart filter that enables users to choose a doctor based on education, experience, availability, and reviews. Patients have the option to search by hospital and physician’s name and share information about their symptoms and conditions.

Emerging Technologies as the Future of Healthcare

As practices and hospitals increasingly use mobile devices to access information, from medical records and history to research and drug therapies, they are better equipped to diagnose and treat patients. New technology in healthcare plays a crucial role in preventing complications, avoiding unnecessary surgeries, improving quality of life, and sustaining health.
